• Magnetic Trainers: These are very quiet, but as you increase your speed, the resistance only increases linearly. When riding outdoors, resistance increases exponentially as you ride faster. To compensate for this drawback, the magnetic resistance can be changed to three different settings. Blackburn magnetic trainers sell for $159.95
• Fluid Trainers: These are the best, as well as the most expensive. They offer the proper resistance, but are much quieter than wind trainers. Blackburn fluid trainers sell for $229.95
• Heavy-Duty Fluid Trainer For heavy-duty usage, we recommend the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Fluid Trainer, which sells for $330. This fluid trainer is guaranteed not to leak - The resistance unit is completely sealed & connected to the drive shaft by 12 powerful magnets. It is unconditionally guaranteed not to leak for 5 years or 50,000 miles. The frame is wider than other models to provide good stability, and has a lifetime guarantee. The legs are adjustable so that you can level your bike without using a riser block. If you are going to do a lot of hard riding, this trainer is worth the investment.
• Wind Trainers: These are the least expensive trainers. They accurately simulate wind resistance, but are so noisy they are not very popular these days. Their main selling point is that they are inexpensive. Unfortunately, the ones we have seen lately are so cheaply made that we have decide not to sell them.

We generally get a number of trainers in the fall, and sell them out by spring, although we sometimes have 1 or 2 through the summer. We usually have bicycles on a few of them in the store during the winter. If you are over 21, we will be glad to let you try one.

There are a couple of accessories that you might consider getting with your trainer. The Sweat Net is made of cotton & attaches with straps to your handlebars & seatpost. It will keep perspiration off your bike and your floor. Remember that when you ride indoors there won't be any breeze to cool you off. The second item you might want is the Trakblock. It keeps your bike level, so that you don't feel like you are riding downhill all the time. The Trakblock fits 650C, 700C & 26" wheels.

To keep your workouts interesting, consider some of out workout videos. The Spinervals & Competition videos have you riding at varying speeds. You can find these & many other bicycling videos on our Pete & Ed Books web site.

Another way to keep things interesting is to change your workout into a video game. GameBike allows you to play video games while riding your trainer. Speed is controlled by your pedaling, and direction from your steering. A controller mounts on your handlebars for other functions. I love their slogan - "Play, don't train!"
