The main advantage of tandem bicycles is that they allow two riders of unequal abilities to ride together. This could include a spouse who rides only ocassionally, someone with a disability that can't ride alone, or a child (requires a child stoker kit). There are a couple factors that you should take into account before deciding to buy a tandem:

Tandems are sold in relatively small numbers, and therefore are more expensive. You should expect to pay a little more than twice the price of a comparable single bike.
Tandems present a bit of a logistical problem. If you have a van or full-size pickup, you're probably okay. Otherwise, you will need a special tandem attachment for your car rack. Be sure to include that in your budgeting.
Tandems require some teamwork between the captain (person in front) and the stoker (person in back). For example, you will both need to lean to the same side when you come to a stop.

Fuji Shangri-La for Two ($725) - A basic cruiser tandem with a 3-speed coaster brake rear hub.
Raleigh Companion ($640) - A sport-comfort tandem with 24-speeds, steel frame (44 pounds), V-brakes, and a seat-post shock for stoker.
Co-Motion Periscope ($2995) - This is a custom tandem, with a frame that is hand made in the U.S., which is why it is so much more expensive than the others. It features a telescoping rear seat that can accomodate riders from small children (without a child stoker kit) to full size adults. This is a great bike for cyclists who want to be able to ride with their spouse or with their kids. It can also be ordered with S&S couplings to make traveling with it mush easier. We do not stock, but will gladly order recumbent tandems from Rans for you. Please realize that tandems are more expensive than single bikes, and recumbents are more expensive than traditional bikes. Therefore, recumbent tandems are quite pricey.

The lowest price recumbent tandem from Rans is their Screamer Sport ($3395). It has mostly Shimano SRAM 7.0 components & a Chromoly frame, and weighs in at 45 pounds. Optional accessories include fenders, front suspension fork, a rear rack, and mirrors.
Their original Screamer ($3999) features mostly SRAM 9.0 components. It is also available in an optional traveler package ($4599) which features S & S couplings that allow it to be broken down easily for shipping.

There is an active tandem club in town called HOOTS , which stands for "Hoosiers Out On Tandems". They have rides at least once a month during the summer, and many attend the Midwest Tandem Rally each year, which is held in a different city each year over the Labor Day Weekend.
